Work on an expansion to the Northern State University Barnett Center will begin next month.

The low bid of about $2.66 million from Gray Construction of Watertown was approved Friday by the South Dakota Board of Regents building committee. That's about $200,000 less than than the regents had approved in spending authority for construction.

No tax money will be used on the project. Even though NSU sought private donations to pay for the addition, state officials had to authorize spending the money.

The 26,411-square-foot expansion will include more space for basketball locker rooms, coaches' offices, the wrestling room and the weight room. The work is supposed to be finished in summer 2012.

One row of parking will be lost when the addition is built on the north side of the Barnett Center. The height of the addition's second level, including the glass front, will be 13 feet.

In addition to the construction cost, NSU can spend $400,000 for expenses such as architect fees, soil testing and engineering work. That money was also raised privately.
